SUMMARY:3/1 Hatha Yoga Pradipika
DESCRIPTION:This classic 15th Century text by Swami Swatmarama outlines\, in very specific terms\, how the vigorous physical practices of hatha yoga may be employed to bring about a profound spiritual transformation in the life of the practitioner. The effective means involves the arousal and skillful manipulation of internal subtle energies (prana and kundalini) in order to effect profound states of consciousness\, intended to culminate in deep wisdom and spiritual liberation. The 389 verses of the text are divided into four chapters which cover a broad range of practical instructions for serious yoga practice\, including: restraints\, observances\, diet\, asanas (postures)\, advanced purification techniques\, pranayama (yogic breathing)\, energy locks and seals\, and the culminating stages of nada yoga or absorption in interior sounds. This course will include some basic practice elements involving asana\, pranayama\, and stimulation of cakra centers through the chanting of Sanskrit seed syllables. This text is essential reading for yoga teachers who wish to have a more fully grounded understanding of the vital connection between the physical and spiritual dimensions of classical yoga. \nCLICK TO REGISTER THROUGH LMU \nRequired Text: \n\nSwami Muktibodhananda\, Hatha Yoga Pradipika\, 3rd Edition (Bihar School of Yoga\, 2013)\n\n\n\n\nStatus\nRegistration Available\n\n\nCourse Code\nYGPX821.0182073\n\n\nSession\nSpring 2017\n\n\nCategory\nYoga Studies\n\n\nDays\nW\n\n\nDates\n3/01/17 – 4/05/17\n\n\nTimes\n1:00 PM – 3:00 PM\n\n\nFormat\nClassroom\n\n\nAlternate Schedule\nNo class meeting on 3/08/17\n\n\nInstructor\nBurkhalter\, Erika\n\n\n\n  \nErika Burkhalter\, MA Yoga Studies\, MS Neuropsychology\, E-RYT 500\, has been teaching yoga since 1999\, and exploring its practices since childhood.   Erika teaches at Yoga Works\, Costa Mesa\, and offers philosophy and asana intensives to a variety of yoga teacher training programs in Southern California. A graduate of Loyola Marymount’s inaugural class of the M.A. in Yoga Studies\, Erika focused her research on the interconnection between mythology\, philosophy and modern science. As a former neuroscientist\, Erika is particularly intrigued with how ancient wisdom correlates with modern science to allow us to lead happier\, more fulfilling lives. The author of several articles\, Erika is currently completing the writing of her book\, Interconnected.   http://www.erikaburkhalter.com \n  \n\n\n\nLocation\nBe The Change Yoga\, 3943 Portola Parkway\, Irvine\, CA 92602\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFee(s) \n\n\n\n\n\n$ 195\nTuition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$ 195\nTotal Fees

SUMMARY:1/21 Yoga Sutras Course - Chapters 3/4
DESCRIPTION:This Course is Open to All Students\nThe only course of its kind in Orange County!! Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras remains the single most important text on Yoga. Composed over 2\,300 years ago\, the Sutras present Yoga as a complete system of spiritual psychology. This great work offers profound insights on the nature of the mind\, as well as a pharmacopeia of suggestions for reducing suffering and cultivating More Sustained Joy. Familiarity with the Sutras is essential for the most effective practice of Yoga as well as a deeper understanding of Yoga psychology. Studying these timeless truths with a qualified teacher (one with whom you resonate) is a journey deep into the human heart and mind. \nThe Format\nThis in-depth course will complete all four Chapters of the Yoga Sutras and will discuss the different levels of meaning in each sutra and the various applications which follow from each interpretation. This course is open to the public\, for those who would like to learn more about Yoga philosophy and how to integrate it into daily life. This course is also included in our 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training Program. Yoga Teachers can complete all four chapters and apply the 30 hours to their certification. \nStudents are welcome to start with Chapter 1 or Chapter 2 – the order does not matter. However the student must have completed both Chapters 1/2 before going on to Chapters 3/4. The course meets five Saturday’s per year from 12:30-6:30pm. \n  \nChapter 1\nSamadhi Pada\, the first chapter of Yoga’s foundation text offers a rich overview of the many tools and strategies on which Patanjali elaborates throughout the entire work. In this profound introduction\, he defines Yoga\, discusses it’s benefits. Here\, he offers a variety of short-term solutions to the many obstacles that may arise on the path to the Goal. In the chapter\, Patanjali describes the various functions of the mind elaborates on experiential nature of Yoga practice stresses need for a relationship with a teacher. \n  \nChapter 2\nOf the Sutra’s four chapters\, the second chapter\, Sadhana Pada\, is certainly the most practical. Here\, Patanjali expounds on the nature and psychological causes of suffering (the klesas)\, and offers a complete\, holistic system for transforming the human being\, the eight limbs\, or Astanga Yoga. He explores the first five limbs\, which include Yoga’s timeless guidelines for relationships and lifestyle\, as well as instructions on the correct practice of Asana and Pranayama. \n  \nChapter 3\nThe third chapter\, Vibuthi Pada\, completes the 8-limb path with the last three limbs Dharana (concentration)\, Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (absorption\, or flow). The process of these tree is called samyama and Patanjali then gives many examples of meditative practice\, but also warns of being sidetracked by any powers gained along the way. \n  \nChapter 4\nThe fourth and final chapter\, Kaivalya Pada\, explains that powers can be gained in various ways\, the only reliable path is through the Astanga (8-limb) path to Samadhi. It is someone who has taken this route that is the most reliable teacher. Patanjali then picks up earlier themes and concludes with the term kaivalya\, a concept of increasing freedom from suffering which requires a clear mind created through the practice of Yoga. \n  \nThe Teacher\n \nRobert Birnberg has been a student of the Yoga Sutras for over four decades. For the past twenty years\, he has studied this brilliant work with teachers in the lineage of T.Krishnamacharya\, the father of modern Yoga. He is one of a handful of people personally certified by Krishnamacharya’s son\, T.K.V. Desikachar to train teachers. Robert is dedicated to mining the Sutra’s timeless truths for common sense life-skills\, leading to increased optimism\, better health\, more satisfying relationships\, and measurably enhanced wellbeing. He teaches private\, therapeutic Yoga\, trains teachers in the U.S and abroad and is on the faculty of the Loyola Marymount Yoga Therapy Program. Robert is also a certified Positive Psychology Coach\, allowing him to effectively combine Yoga’s tools with proven Positive Psychology interventions. \nWe will be using ‘The Heart of Yoga’ by TKY Desikachar or ‘Reflections on the Yoga Sutras’\, by TKV Desikachar\, available at www.kym.org\, (please note that this book has been taken off the KYM website\, we are contacting the KYM to place a bulk order from India) or ‘Liberating Isolation’\, by Frans Moors\, available at www.sky-yoga.net\, (allow three to four weeks for delivery). \n

SUMMARY:1/11 3-Week Group Cleanse
DESCRIPTION:Start the year off right with a 3-week Optimal Health Cleanse! \nAfter the holidays\, we feel a bit heavier and more lethargic. To put it simply\, we eat more of the wrong types of foods and move less. January is a time to set new goals and intentions for the New Year\, so what better way to begin than by clearing your mind and cleaning out your body! \nJoin us at Be The Change for a 3-week cleanse towards optimal health. We’re all in this together\, so a group cleanse provides a strong sense of support\, accountability and thus improves motivation and success. \n \nWe are what we eat. The quality of the food we put into our bodies\, directly relates to the quality of our tissues. Yoga refers to the physical body\, as the “food body”. When we eat processed or unhealthy foods\, it taxes our bodies energetic reserves\, weakens our immune system and creates waste and blockages in our digestive\, cardiovascular\, respiratory and energetic systems\, leading to chronic disease. \nWhen we nourish our bodies with high quality foods and give the digestive system a break through fasting\, all of the systems in our bodies improve and we can move into a state of optimal health. Throughout this 3-week cleanse\, you will learn more about high-quality nutrition practices\, detoxification techniques\, Yoga tools to improve digestion and elimination\, how to manage stress and ultimately sustain long-term positive health behaviors. \nThis 3-week cleanse includes: \n\n3 BTC Health Club Meetings\n3 Educational Yoga Therapy classes during the Health Club Meetings\nOptimal Health lectures\, handouts\, personal journal and educational materials\nYoga Therapy\, Positive Psychology and Public Health practices to improve physical\, mental\, emotional and energetic wellbeing\n5-day Smart Pressed Juice Cleanse\n30 days of Unlimited Yoga at Be The Change Yoga\nSupport\, friendships\, community and accountability to foster positive change\nA whole new You!\n\n \n \n \nWeek 1 Health Club Meeting: Wednesday 1/11/17 6:00-8:00pm \nCLASS: Our first class will meet on Wednesday January 11th and will be lead by Katie Allen. She will provide an overview of the cleanse as well as a lead a lecture on the environmental conditions that we are currently experiencing\, that have contributed to our chronic disease epidemic and the tools we can employ to take better care of ourselves from a Public Health and Yoga perspective. This class will also include an hour-long all-levels Yoga practice. \nFOCUS: The first week will focus on reducing or removing inflammatory foods from our diets; which include sugar\, alcohol\, meat\, caffeine and fried foods. You can customize this portion as you see fit\, according to your unique needs or advice from your healthcare provider. \nYOGA: 30 days of Unlimited Yoga is included in the price of the cleanse\, so we encourage our students to take at least 2 classes per week. Movement improves circulation\, digestion and makes us feel more connected to our bodies\, leading to improved health decisions. \n \nWeek 2 Health Club Meeting: Wednesday 1/18/17 6:00-8:00pm \nCLASS: Our second meeting will meet on Wednesday January 18th and will be lead by Alexandra Boggio. She will be presenting on holistic nutrition practices and how to reverse chronic conditions with diet and lifestyle management programs. This class will also include an hour-long all-levels Yoga practice. \nFOCUS: The second week will include a 5-day juice Smart Pressed Juice cleanse. We LOVE this cleanse for a few reasons: \n\n#1 Its not just juice\, the daily plan includes 2 protein shakes\, 1 fiber shake and a healthy lunch.\n#2 It has the lowest amount of sugar than any other juice cleanse!\n#3 Its all organic\, so there are no pesticides.\n#4 You don’t have to keep the juices refrigerated because they are in powdered form; which makes it easier to travel with throughout the day.\n#5 There are extra portions left after you complete the 5-day cleanse that you can use to lighten up your diet and increase your nutrients in the future.\n\nYOGA: During the week of the cleanse\, we recommend taking more gentle or restorative Yoga classes. It’s important to move slower and exert less physical energy when reducing food consumption to optimize internal healing processes. \n \nWeek 3 Health Club Meeting: Wednesday 1/25/17 6:00-8:00pm \nCLASS: Our third meeting will meet on Wednesday January 25th and will be lead by Allison Martin Prince. Each class will begin with a check-in to share personal experiences and best practices. The lecture topic will focus on how to develop and maintain long-term practices with regards to nutrition\, stress and physical activity. This class will also include an hour-long all-levels Yoga practice. \nFOCUS: After we all feel great from our Smart Pressed Juice Cleanse\, we will introduce a healthy meal plan back into our diets and employ the tool of bhavana (positive visualization) to help us set goals and sustain positive practices as we move forward in 2017. \nYOGA: During the final week of the cleanse\, the focus is on building strength in our physical Yoga practice\, as well as employing the benefits of twisting movements and breathwork to assist in detoxification process. \n \n  \nPricing: \n\n$325 cleanse with the Health Club Meetings (student already has an existing Unlimited Yoga Membership)\n$375 cleanse with the Health Club Meetings and an includes a 30-day Unlimited Yoga Membership\n$175 a la carte Smart Pressed Juice cleanse (does not include meetings or Yoga)\n\n

In the chapter\, Patanjali describes the various functions of the mind elaborates on experiential nature of Yoga practice stresses need for a relationship with a teacher. \n  \n\nChapter 2\nOf the Sutra’s four chapters\, the second chapter\, Sadhana Pada\, is certainly the most practical. \n  \n\nChapter 3\nThe third chapter\, Vibuthi Pada\, completes the 8-limb path with the last three limbs Dharana (concentration)\, Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (absorption\, or flow). The process of these tree is called samyama and Patanjali then gives many examples of meditative practice\, but also warns of being sidetracked by any powers gained along the way. \n  \n  \nChapter 4\nThe fourth and final chapter\, Kaivalya Pada\, explains that powers can be gained in various ways\, the only reliable path is through the Astanga (8-limb) path to Samadhi. It is someone who has taken this route that is the most reliable teacher. Patanjali then picks up earlier themes and concludes with the term kaivalya\, a concept of increasing freedom from suffering which requires a clear mind created through the practice of Yoga. \n \n \n\nThe Teacher\n  \nRobert Birnberg has been a student of the Yoga Sutras for over four decades. \n  \n \n

Choosing to align your thoughts\, words\, and actions empowers you to create and sustain the positive changes you desire. \nChoose to educate and empower yourSelf to transform your life in positive ways – the yogic way! \n \nInfinite Possibilities is a modern day program based on ancient yogic philosophy. Yoga is a path of Self-transformation\, and that transformation begins in the mind.
