The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the source text of Classical Yoga. The Yoga Sutras are believed to be compiled around 500 BCE – 400 CE , they comprise the framework, tools and methodology for a transformative yoga practice. If you’ve taken any of our teacher training programs, you’ve become familiar with the sutras and most likely have chanted a few of them!

Rishi Nagori

Rishi is visiting California from India. While he is here he is teaching Yoga and Sanskrit. Rishi founded his own yoga institute in India and is here to share his practice and experience. He belongs to traditional Indian family believing firmly in Ahimsa (non-violence), He completed his education after graduating university from U.S.A. in 2012. He returned to India and joined his family business of manufacturing. In 2013, while still working he enrolled himself as a student at the renowned Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune. Without really knowing at the time, he was initiated on the path of Yoga as a Sadhaka.

This was the beginning to his journey of transformation, a quote by BKS Iyengar that Rishi relates and describes what happened to him is “Yoga does not just change the way we see things; it transforms the person who sees.” As his Abhyasa (practice) grew in class so did his Vairagya (detachment) grew outside class. He started questioning- what he was doing ? What is the purpose of life ? and to seek answers to these questions in 2016 he took a six months sabbatical from work and travelled through the Himalayas. He lived in Ashrams and he learnt from various teachers and traditions. These experiences helped him deepen his own practice, bringing clarity of what he needed to do next. In 2017, he sold the family business to become a full-time student of Yoga and Sanskrit and has since completely focused on his Sadhana. He completed his diploma in Sanskrit from the University of Pune.

Rishi believes that learning never stops and every seeker can learn yoga through their rigorous and continuous practice. His practice honors the deep roots of tradition. Rishi encourages his students to explore, experiment and discover their own path. His teaching philosophy is teaching what is appropriate for his group of students in class rather than what he knows as a teacher. He constantly gives his students individual feedback and corrections throughout his classes.
