Robert Birnberg, C-IAYT
A devoted student of Yoga for over four decades, I discovered the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya in 1995. For the next 30 years, I pursued intensive studies with TKV Desikachar, his family and senior students in India, Europe and America. While in India, I was given an in-depth education on the underlying principles, tools and adaptations of Yoga Therapy. This included an internship at the KYM, a world-renowned Yoga Therapy clinic in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Under Desikachar’s guidance, I began what would become a life-long relationship with Yoga’s foundation text, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, which I studied in the classical, word-for-word style.
Several years later, I recognised the striking parallels between Yoga Psychology and the burgeoning science of Positive Psychology, and became a certified PP Coach in 2014. Since then, I have worked to integrate Positive Psychology’s evidence-based interventions with the time-tested techniques of Classical Yoga Therapy.
For the past 25 years, was clinical director of ‘The Breathing Space’, a home-based wellness centre, where I offered Yoga Sutras Study, Yoga Teacher trainings, mentorship programs and a variety of workshops on Relationships, Addiction, Positive Psychology, and Bhavana, a powerful meditative tool.
I have also facilitated private Yoga/ Positive Psychology Coaching sessions with hundreds of individuals and couples looking to create more meaningful lives more satisfying relationships.
I currently serve on faculty at Loyola University’s Yoga Therapist Training Program, where I mentor students and present modules on on Yoga Sutras, Addiction, Respiration and Digestion.
My first book, ‘Why Yoga Works, and How It Can Work For You’ was published last year and is currently being used as a teacher training manual by Yoga studios worldwide. It’s available on Amazon and selected bookstores.
